Torme, Mel / Mulligan, Gerry / Shearing, George - The Classic Concert Live

Although this classic 1982 concert wasn’t the first time that Mel Tormé, Gerry Mulligan, and George Shearing had collaborated—their first 1977 concert collaboration was also notable as it was not only the genesis of a major “comeback” by velvet-toned vocalist Tormé but also the impetus of a Tormé/Shearing partnership that would result in several acclaimed Concord Jazz recordings—it is the first and only performance by this terrific triumvirate that’s known to have been recorded. Additionally, in this Carnegie Hall performance, the trio’s creative powers—both as individuals and as a collective—were clearly in full swing, revealing an unparalleled combination of musicality and wit in dazzling renditions of songs by such great composers as Basie, Ellington, Monk, Jobim, and Mulligan. An NPR broadcast in 1983 unequivocally confirmed the legendary status of this concert to numerous jazz fans. Now, after more than twenty years, Concord Jazz is proud to finally make this historic, never-before-released 1982 Carnegie Hall concert recording—carefully mastered from the original master tapes—available for the first time. 13 Tracks.
