Goykovich, Dusko - Samba Tzigane

Dusko Goykovich is among Europe's living legends in jazz. The list of musicians he has worked with reads like a "who is who" of jazz history: Benny Bailey, Chet Baker, Kenny Barron, Gary Burton, Kenny Clarke, Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson, Tommy Flanagan, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Woody Herman, Thad Jones, Lee Konitz, Albert Mangelsdorff, Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Pettiford, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Lucky Thompson, Mal Waldron, Phil Woods... and many more. A citizen of Munich, Germany, Dusko Goykovich still holds a busy tour schedule including small band and big band performances and guest appearances in many European countries as well as Japan and Korea.
Usually much admired for his perfect bebop lines and his soulful ballad renditions (mostly on muted trumpet or flugelhorn), Goykovich opened a new chapter in 2003 when he presented "Samba Do Mar", his first complete Brazilian-inspired album that was to charm and conquer listeners worldwide. Accompanied by a choice team of individualists on guitar, bass and drums and going for a mix of evergreens (Jobim, Villa-Lobos) and originals, Goykovich's playing adds a fresh, elegant and sometimes elegiac touch to the lovely grooves of Brazilian music. "Samba Do Mar" was a big success, received a lot of critical acclaim and was awarded the prestigious German Record Critics' Award. (www.schallplattenkritik.de/about.html).
Now Dusko Goykovich and his international team - Ferenc Snétberger on guitar, Martin Gjakonovski on bass, Jarrod Cagwin on drums - return to Brazil with "Samba Tzigane". Featuring guest performances by Brazil-born flutist Márcio Tubino and Brazil-loving singer Céline Rudolph, the new album covers an even broader terrain of cool samba and joyful bossa vibes. Beside the classics by Jobim, Villa-Lobos, Baden Powell and Luiz Antonio, it offers relaxed and charming originals by Tubino, Rudolph and Goykovich himself. Released on the occasion of Dusko Goykovich's 75th birthday in October 2006, this album celebrates a great trumpeter's melodicism, imagination and youthfulness. Happy birthday, Dusko!
